AG de l'UMS : Les magistrats disent stop aux dérapages politiques contre la Justice
During the general assembly of the Union of Magistrates of Senegal (UMS), President Amadou Chimère Diouf reaffirmed the organization's openness to dialogue and reforms, while strongly condemning personal attacks and abuses against the justice system and its actors.
"We recognize that the people, in whose name justice is administered, have the right to criticize its functioning," Diouf said. However, he stressed the need to distinguish between constructive criticism and discredit, stressing that a clear line must be drawn between the two.
The UMS president highlighted the solidity of Senegal's justice system, anchored in law and the Constitution. He recalled its international recognition, hailed at the meeting of the African group of the International Union of Magistrates in Casablanca in April 2025. "This reputation commits magistrates to respect their oath and the principles of dignity, reserve, and loyalty," he added.
Amadou Chimère Diouf denounced attempts to exploit justice for political gain: "Speeches filled with attacks and invective seek to influence public opinion and alter perceptions of the institution." He called for an independent, impartial justice system that is free from political controversy, stating that "guaranteeing fairness requires a justice system that is equidistant from political parties."
The president urged his peers to respect their oath by avoiding public positions that contradict their commitments. "Magistrates must demonstrate restraint, humility, and prudence to preserve the institution's image of impartiality," he insisted, recalling that "Lady Justice is neither with nor against anyone." Quoting former Dean Kéba Mbaye, he emphasized that justice must not "descend into the political arena."
Regarding the recent law on the National Assembly's internal regulations, which provided for Parliament to summon magistrates, Mr. Diouf justified the UMS's silence. As this provision is currently under review by the Constitutional Council, he considered that respect for the legal framework and the principles of the profession prevailed over any populist reaction.
