Guinée équatoriale: Baltazar Engonga, auteur des fameuses sextapes, condamné à huit ans de prison dans une autre affaire
A senior Equatorial Guinean official, who posted sex tapes that sparked international buzz on social media in November, was sentenced Tuesday in a separate case by the Bioko provincial court to eight years in prison for embezzlement of public funds.
"The Bioko Provincial Court sentences Baltazar Ebang Engonga to eight years in prison and a fine of 125.4 million CFA francs (approximately 190,000 euros)," said Hilario Mitogo, director general of press at the Supreme Court of Justice in Malabo, in a WhatsApp conversation dedicated to journalists.
The former director of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) was on trial alongside five other senior officials for embezzlement of public funds.
"The amounts, ranging from 5 to 125 million CFA francs (between 7,600 and 190,000 euros), were used for personal purposes under the cover of travel and mission expenses already financed by the State," the court declared.
Baltasar Ebang Engonga made headlines in November when sex tapes were leaked on social media while he was in pre-trial detention at Malabo's Black Beach prison in connection with the embezzlement of public funds.
Filmed on unknown dates in various locations - including his office at the Ministry of Finance - and with various partners, including the wives of local dignitaries, the videos shared on social media were among the most discussed topics.
Their viral spread prompted the Equatorial Guinean authorities to limit internet traffic in the country to stop downloads.
But the Baltasar effect has spread like wildfire outside the country, with songs, dances, and photomontages awarding him the "2024 Ballon d'Or" trophy or proposing an aphrodisiac called "Balthazariem."
Nicknamed "Bello" because of his good looks, the senior civil servant, a fifty-year-old married father, is the son of Baltasar Engonga Edjo, the current president of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) commission.
Equatorial Guinea, a small, oil-rich Central African country, has been ruled for more than 46 years by 83-year-old President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. This is a world record for longevity in power for a living head of state, excluding monarchs.
