The junta and magistrates are at loggerheads in Niger: the latter called for a strike on Friday after the dissolution of several judicial sector unions and the dismissal of one of their members.
Niger is ruled by a military junta headed by General Abdourahamane Tiani, who came to power in a coup in July 2023.
Last week, the regime dissolved five judicial sector unions, arguing that they "do not work for the proper functioning of the public justice service."
And on Thursday, Abdoul-Nasser Bagna Abdourahamane, the secretary general of SAMAN, a powerful magistrates' union that is one of the dissolved organizations, was removed from the judiciary by decree.
The reasons for this dismissal were not officially known.
On Thursday evening, SAMAN called the measure an "unprecedented authoritarian drift" and declared an indefinite strike. It has also filed appeals against its dissolution.
SAMAN strike movements are generally well followed in Niger.
In addition to SAMAN, four other justice sector unions were dissolved last week by ministerial decrees.
The Niger Bar Association had also called for a strike on Thursday and Friday to protest the dissolutions, and other trade unions have called for the orders to be annulled.
In April, the junta had already dissolved three other unions: the Customs Union and two from the Water and Forestry Department, in accordance with the "Charter of Refoundation" which "formally" prohibits the country's defense and security forces from exercising their right to organize.
This text, promulgated at the end of March by General Tiani, has the value of a Constitution and sets the duration of the military regime at a minimum of five years.
The army and paramilitary forces (customs, water and forestry, police) are engaged in the anti-jihadist fight in this country, which has been regularly hit for the past ten years by attacks from groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State organization.
