The PDCI, the main opposition party in Côte d'Ivoire, rejected on Thursday the idea of boycotting the October 25 presidential election and maintained its commitment to putting forward its candidate, Tidjane Thiam, despite the definitive rejection of his candidacy earlier this week.
The candidacies of the two main opponents, Mr. Thiam and former President Laurent Gbagbo, were rejected by the Constitutional Council on Monday, due to their removal from the electoral lists.
A decision without appeal which is part of a tense political climate in the country that has been going on for several months.
"There will be no boycott, that would be too easy. There can't be an election without Tijdane Thiam," Noël Akossi Bendjo, vice-president of the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire (PDCI), assured the press on Thursday.
Mr. Thiam remains "the party's one and only choice," added Calice Yapo, a PDCI official, denouncing "a gross instrumentalization of justice."
The party did not specify the methods of action it intended to use to achieve this.
In a document sent to AFP on Wednesday, Laurent Gbagbo's African People's Party - Côte d'Ivoire (PPA-CI) also denounced "a decision contrary to the Constitution and Côte d'Ivoire's international commitments."
"The law cannot be twisted to eliminate a political opponent," the party explains.
Although the PPA-CI has not commented on a possible boycott, there is no question of considering a plan B either.
"There is no alternative to Laurent Gbagbo. We will continue the peaceful struggle against a fourth term," declared Sébastien Dano Djedje, the party's executive president, on Tuesday.
Accused of choosing its opponents, the ruling party insists that it complies with the decisions of an independent judiciary.
Among the five candidates qualified to compete, former ministers Jean-Louis Billon and Ahoua Don Mello are respectively dissidents of the PDCI and the PPA-CI.
The other three are outgoing President Alassane Ouattara, former First Lady Simon Ehivet Gbagbo and former minister Henriette Lagou.
