"Trop tard": des Palestiniens désespérés après la déclaration de la famine à Gaza par l'ONU
To grab a few handfuls of rice, haggard Palestinians, armed with plastic pots and buckets, rush to a soup kitchen in war-ravaged Gaza City, officially declared famine-stricken by the UN.
AFP footage filmed Saturday in the city, which Israel is threatening with total destruction if the Islamist movement Hamas does not accept peace on its terms, shows young people desperately holding out their bowls to be refilled.
It shows a boy scraping with his bare hands the last grains of rice stuck to the bottom of a pot. A little further away, sitting on the ground in the shade, a little girl eats with a spoon from a plastic bag.
"We no longer have a home, no food, no income (...) so we are forced to turn to charity kitchens, but they are not enough to satisfy our hunger," says Youssef Hamad, 58, displaced from the town of Beit Hanoun, in the northern Gaza Strip.
Some of these soup kitchens are supplied with food by mosques or local Islamic charities. Others are supplied by international NGOs or UN agencies.
In early March, the Israeli government imposed a total humanitarian blockade on the Gaza Strip, leading to the most severe food shortages since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by the unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023.
It relaxed it from the end of May, but the amount of international aid allowed to enter since then is considered largely insufficient by the UN and humanitarians, something Israel disputes.
After months of warnings, the UN officially declared famine in Gaza on Friday, blaming Israel, which immediately rejected the accusation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a "blatant lie."
But this UN declaration comes "much too late," laments Umm Mohammad, 34, near another soup kitchen in Deir el-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip.
"Due to a lack of food and water, children (...) are sometimes unable to get up, feeling dizzy," she says.
On Saturday, the head of the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said it was "time for the Israeli government to stop denying the famine it has caused in Gaza."
"All those who have influence must use it with determination and a sense of moral duty," wrote Philippe Lazzarini on X.
Mr. Netanyahu blamed the shortages, which he said were "temporary," on "systematic theft of aid" by Hamas.
UNRWA said Saturday that its warehouses in Jordan and Egypt were full and that there was "enough food, medicine and hygiene products to fill 6,000 trucks."
Meanwhile, Israel continues its bombardment of the Gaza Strip. AFP footage shows thick smoke rising over the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City, as Palestinians search through the rubble of gutted buildings.
Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal in Gaza described the situation in the Sabra and Zeitoun neighborhoods as "absolutely catastrophic," citing "the total destruction of entire residential blocks."
"We are trapped here, we live in fear, we have nowhere to go. There is nowhere safe in Gaza. To move now is to run to our deaths," said Ahmad Jundiyeh, 35, displaced in the northern outskirts of Zeitoun.
"We hear the bombings non-stop (...) the fighter jets, the artillery fire and even the drone explosions," he told AFP by telephone.
"We are terrified, with the feeling that the end is near."
Mr. Bassal said that Civil Defense rescuers had counted 51 people killed Saturday by Israeli strikes or gunfire.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened Friday to destroy Gaza City if Hamas refuses to disarm, release the hostages kidnapped on October 7 and end the war on conditions set by Israel.

JAMAIS DEUX SANS TROIS
L’atrocité que des dirigeants israéliens font subir au peuple palestinien n’est pas inédite. La boucherie de 1982 à Sabra et Chatila ne s’effacera jamais de la mémoire humaine. Pourtant, ni Menahem Bégin, ni le boucher Ariel Sharon n’ont eu de compte à rendre pour crime contre l’humanité. Aujourd’hui, c’est Netanyahu qui prend le relai pour anéantir le peuple palestinien.
Tout cela dans l’impunité la plus totale. Figurez-vous qu’un gérant de camp de vacances est en train de se faire bousculer par la justice pour avoir refusé d’accueillir des enfants israéliens en colonie de vacances. Oui, vous avez bien entendu, « colonie de vacances » ! Les enfants de Gaza, ce qu’ils vivent n’a rien d’une cure de vacances ? quand ils ne meurent pas sous les bombardements ils meurent de faim. Avec cela, qui est assez naïf pour croire que le calvaire palestinien est terminé ? Jamais deux sans trois !

Les enfants des rues du Sénégal, qui les met dans ces conditions? Des sénégalais pur jus et "religieux" soit-disant! Cela fait une différence avec les petits de Gaza. Tu peux le comprendre, ça?
En Afrique il ya des guerres à Gaza un génocide. Personne ne pourra dire je n'étais pas au courant. Le lache et l'hypocrite n'ont jamais triomphé.
"Honte aux arabes voisins" le premier commentaire parle d'humanité. Les Soudanais ne sont pas exterminés par des colons. Les Juifs sans terres sans nation, désobeissant à Allah essayent d'exterminer les Gazaouis. Il n'ya pas de guerre à Gaza mais un génocide.

Dénoncer la situation à Gaza n'est point synonyme de pro-arabe.
Oui, les actions du Hamas, au 7 octobre, relèvent de la barbarie et de l'ignominie comme tout acte terroriste. La riposte orchestrée par Netanyahu ne l'est pas moins. Affamer et tuer des enfants d'un peuple dans le but de l'anéantir, cela s'appelle un génocide. Je ne suis pas sûr que ça soit comparable au terrorisme abject du hamas qui doit être éradiqué. Entre la cause et les conséquence, dans cette situation, il y plus qu'une disproportion, il y a un dérapage total et ce n'est pas nouveau de la part de gouvernants israéliens. Malheureusement, ils ne s'appellent pas tous Shimon Pérés.
