Journée mondiale de prévention du suicide : Une main tendue peut sauver une vie
Every September 10, the international community commemorates World Suicide Prevention Day, a date dedicated to raising awareness of a silent tragedy. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 700,000 people commit suicide worldwide each year, or one every 40 seconds.
Senegal is no exception to this phenomenon. Suicide cases are regularly reported in several regions of the country, affecting both young people and adults. However, no consolidated national statistics are available, making it difficult to assess the extent of the problem.
Mental health experts point out that this lack of data also reflects the weight of social and cultural taboos, which hamper public discussion around suicide and mental health.
According to experts, the causes of suicide are varied: mental health issues such as depression, social isolation, economic hardship, violence, and even addiction. In many cases, it is a combination of unexpressed and untreated suffering.
Prevention begins with talking and listening. "It's essential to break the silence and encourage those who are suffering to seek help. The support of loved ones can be crucial," psychologists explain.
Mental health associations and certain hospital structures are calling for the strengthening of psychological support mechanisms, but also for greater investment in the training of specialized professionals.
Beyond families and loved ones, the fight against suicide also involves public authorities, schools, associations, and the media. All are called upon to contribute to raising awareness and creating safer and more inclusive environments.
As Senegal celebrates its sporting and political victories, this day recalls another battle: that of mental health. Because behind every number, there is a life, a story, and a word, a gesture, a listening ear can be enough to save a life.
