Plusieurs dirigeants européens accompagneront Zelensky à Washington pour sa rencontre avec Trump

Volodymyr Zelensky will not be alone in his meeting with Donald Trump this Monday, August 18. The Ukrainian president will be accompanied by several of his European allies to discuss with the American president the exceptional summit held with Vladimir Putin and peace with Russia.

The delegation continues to grow by the hour. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Sunday, August 17, that she and several European leaders would travel to the White House on Monday, alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb have also confirmed their attendance. NATO chief Mark Rutte will also be on the trip. The exceptional Trump-Putin summit that took place in Alaska and the war in Ukraine will obviously be on the agenda.

The European Commission President also announced that Volodymyr Zelensky would be in Brussels on Sunday afternoon to participate in a video conference of European allies. This meeting is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. UTC with the countries of the "coalition of the willing," Kyiv's allies, to prepare the next stages of peace talks on Ukraine following the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Ukraine's allies are expected to discuss security guarantees to Kyiv as part of a possible peace agreement at the meeting. Diplomats also expect them to examine the potential outlines of such an agreement between Ukraine and Russia. Following his summit with Vladimir Putin on Friday, Donald Trump announced that his efforts were now focused on developing a peace agreement that would end the war, without requiring a ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Ukraine and Russia continue drone attacks

Kyiv and Moscow attacked each other with drones on Sunday. On the ground, hostilities continue. Kyiv's air force accused Russia of attacking Ukraine with 60 drones, including Iranian Shahed drones, as well as an Iskander missile on Saturday night. The governor of the besieged eastern Donetsk region, Vadim Filashkin, said Russian attacks killed five people in the region on Saturday. In Russia, the Defense Ministry said Kyiv launched 46 drones at the country—mostly over border regions but also over the Nizhny Novgorod region, east of Moscow and hundreds of kilometers from Ukraine.
