Hooded individuals armed with machetes, shotguns, knives, and hammers attacked the villa of Beninese architect Lydia Assani in Saly during the night of Tuesday, August 5, to Wednesday, August 6. Assani, who was abroad for professional reasons at the time of the incident, has lived with her family in the seaside resort for about ten years.
The attackers overpowered the five guards, tying them up, and neutralized the guard dogs, who had been locked in the cellar, before unleashing their fury on the occupants of the premises, the three daughters of the owner of the house, including a 7-year-old girl, and a domestic employee.
False search
According to the story in L'Observateur, which replayed this horror film in its Thursday edition, the criminals first visited the room of the housekeeper, who was sleeping there with the 7-year-old girl. They forced the latter to show them the location of the architect's safe.
Alerted by the noise, Lydia Assani's eldest daughter, MB Assani, who was sleeping in her mother's room, got out of bed, went down the hallway, and came face to face with the thieves following her terrified little sister. The assailants forced her to stay away, making her believe they were police officers with a search warrant.
They entered the architect's room and seized the safe, which contained 10 million CFA francs, according to an estimate reported by L'Observateur, and diamond and gold jewelry. Continuing their evil work, they skillfully searched the other rooms of the house, as if to complete their loot, overturning furniture, ripping out drawers, ripping open cupboards and scattering personal belongings found along the way.
Gang rape
While some of the thieves were turning Lyndia Assani's room upside down, the others, five people, entered the room where the architect's adopted daughter, JA Ndiaye, had taken refuge. The 28-year-old woman was gang-raped, which took place in two stages: first in her room and then in the cellar where the dogs were being kept. "Abandoned, broken, and in a state of shock, JA Ndiaye finally fainted in the backyard of the villa," reports L'Observateur.
Their crime accomplished, the newspaper continues, the attackers seized the Assanis' Ford Limited and drove off into the night.
"It was only around four in the morning, two hours after the attackers had left, that the young ladies, still in shock, managed to contact their mother abroad to tell her, between sobs and shudders, the nightmare they had just experienced," reports the daily newspaper.
Video surveillance speaks
A distraught Lydia Assani called her driver, KM Sagna, based in Mbour. Sagna went straight to the Saly police station and alerted the police.
Upon arrival at the scene, the investigative team made the usual observations and seized the CCTV footage. A source from L'Observateur revealed that the analysis of the footage, in collaboration with the Research Brigade, made it possible to follow several sequences of the burglary.
"Faces have even been formally identified," the newspaper reports, reporting that the car stolen by the thieves was found near the Nguékhokh Campsite.
The five security guards were arrested, questioned, and then released. JA Ndiaye, a rape victim, was taken to a health facility for treatment and psychological support, according to L'Observateur.
