Kédougou - Campagne agricole 2025-2026 : Inondations, excès de pluies et attaques de chenilles

The 13th weekly monitoring report for the 2025-2026 agricultural campaign, covering the period from August 14 to 20, 2025, highlights several challenges faced by producers in the Kédougou region, particularly in the Saraya department.

Following the recent rains, flooding has been reported in the villages of Saroudja, Guémédji, Wassangara, Satadougou, and Missirah Dantila. The damage mainly affects corn, rice, and peanut fields, covering an area already estimated at 50 hectares. A census of those affected and the affected areas continues in the affected areas.

Comparison with the same period last year reveals an increase in rainfall in all monitoring stations, with the exception of Dakately where a deficit of -76.4 mm was recorded.

To date, four sowing waves have been recorded. The first and second waves have reached the generative stage for rice, fonio, maize, sorghum and peanuts, while cotton continues its vegetative development.

The third and fourth waves are located between the growth and vegetative development phases.

The report also highlights the presence of fall armyworms (FAW) in some plots of land in the Kédougou region. To contain this threat, a plant protection unit (UPV) deployed from the Missirah phytosanitary base (Tambacounda) has intervened.

In total, 85 hectares have already been treated, with the support of 60 litres of phytosanitary products (Sultan 480 EC) made available to producers.

However, agricultural authorities are calling for increased vigilance against this invasive caterpillar, particularly through awareness-raising and capacity building for producers for more effective control.

Despite generally favorable rainfall conditions, flooding and pest attacks pose serious threats to the success of the current agricultural season. Authorities are continuing monitoring and support efforts to limit losses and support producers' resilience.
