L'ASRED sur l'origine de l'incident de la Mac de Thiès : "C'est le chef de cour qui a violé le règlement des prisons"
The Association for the Support and Social Reintegration of Prisoners (ASRED) was quick to comment on the current situation at the Thiès House of Arrest and Correction (MAC), following the violent clashes that occurred on Saturday afternoon, September 13, 2025, between prisoners and prison guards, resulting in injuries.
According to ASRED President Ibrahima Sall, "it all started with a cell phone that was reported to the head of the yard, who wanted to search it at all costs in order to recover the device, while violating prison regulations that prohibit searches without the authorization of the director, who was absent, and especially on weekends, which are not recommended as search periods."
He notes that "the head of the yard acted out of inexperience and unfortunately it ended up degenerating with injuries recorded on both sides." He also continues: "the current situation at the Thiès MAC constitutes an extremely serious error because in a prison only the director is authorized to give instructions on the search (decree 362 of May 4, 2001 governing prison regulations)."
Therefore, "the person in charge of personnel must assume responsibility in the face of this extremely serious situation," considers ASRED.
"After the Penal Camp prison and the MAC of Mbour, the same problem is now repeating itself in Thiès, and faced with this situation, the Director General of Prisons must take full responsibility," indicates ASRED, which says it has noted that "people who do not have 4 years of service are running very sensitive prisons, with a large number of inmates." Hence, according to it, "the abuses currently recorded in certain prisons."
ASRED suggests that the prison administration take up the challenge of social reintegration, which is its second mission, after security. It promises to publish, in the coming days, an uncompromising report on the current situation in prisons.
