« Il faut un M16 pour arrêter (ce joueur) » : Les propos polémiques de l'entraîneur d’Israël à l’Eurobasket

Israel will not play in the EuroBasket quarterfinals. Ariel Beit-Halahmy's team was defeated by Greece 84-79 last Sunday. Before the thrilling match, Beit-Halahmy made a controversial statement about Greece star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

He did, in fact, indicate that it would take an "M16 to stop him." Needless to say, M16s are standard assault rifles of the US military.

Currently, the Israeli Defense Forces are gradually replacing these weapons. They have adopted the Tavor X95, a locally produced rifle that is more reliable and suitable for urban combat.

By referring to the M16 in his commentary, Beit-Halahmy is using military vocabulary. This doesn't necessarily translate well to sport, hence the controversy his remarks have created.

Let us recall that the match ended with a score of 84 to 79.

Giannis scored 37 points in the game

As the Israeli coach feared, Giannis Antetokounmpo was indeed a nightmare for his team. The Milwaukee Bucks forward put in a high-flying performance, scoring 37 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He made 18 of his 23 shots. It was his best game of the tournament so far.
