In response to France Football's annual Ballon d'Or election, a Senegalese initiative led by journalist Elimane Ndao aims to revolutionize the awarding of individual accolades in football. Launched in 2022, the "The Best Player in the World" platform offers an objective evaluation method to counter the biases of traditional awards such as the Ballon d'Or or FIFA The Best.
Elimane Ndao criticizes the subjective nature of current voting: "I noticed a lot of injustice in the awarding of trophies, especially during the years of Messi and Ronaldo's dominance, when they were systematically the ones who won. These trophies are awarded on a very subjective basis: voting." To remedy this, his platform relies on a calculation system based on precise, quantified, and uniform criteria, evaluating the actual performance of players. "We have established a basis for evaluating the data objectively, placing all players on an equal footing," he explains.
A scalable and transparent classification
The unique feature of this initiative lies in its evolving monthly rankings, which allow fans to follow the players' progress in real time throughout the season. At the end of the season, the 50 best players are selected, and a special ceremony, scheduled for September 20, 2025, will crown the winner, offering an alternative to the Ballon d'Or.
Since its launch, this project has aimed to become a global benchmark for football awards, focusing on transparency and fairness. By moving away from subjective voting, often influenced by popularity or notoriety, "The Best Player in the World" aims to redefine the standards for recognizing individual performances.
