France : deux détenus jugés pour menaces envers Sarkozy en prison

Two detainees are being tried in Paris on Friday afternoon for death threats and complicity against former French President Nicolas Sarkozy on the first day of his detention, the Paris prosecutor's office said.

Ilies B. is accused of having "repeatedly threatened" Mr. Sarkozy with death, saying "he (Mr. Sarkozy) is going to have a bad time in prison", "we are going to avenge Gaddafi, we know everything about Sarkozy".

These threats, via "a video recorded on a phone," were shared "on the social network TikTok," the prosecutor's office further stated. This offense is punishable by three years' imprisonment and a fine of €45,000.

He is also accused of having "knowingly possessed and benefited from a mobile phone, which he knew came from" an "offense of unlawfully handing over an object to a detainee." He faces up to five years in prison for this, among other things.

Ange O. is accused of complicity "by aiding or abetting death threats against Mr. Sarkozy" by "allowing the use of his mobile phone for the filming and distribution of the video containing the threats." He also faces three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.

He is also accused of illegally possessing a mobile phone and refusing to provide the phone's passwords "as part of a preliminary investigation." This latter offense is punishable by three years' imprisonment and a fine of €270,000.

Three inmates at the Parisian Santé prison were taken into custody on Wednesday after a video, apparently shot by an inmate at the prison, was posted on social media, making threats upon arrival at Mr. Sarkozy's premises the previous day.

The former head of state was sentenced on September 25 to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy, a sentence accompanied by a warrant of committal with provisional execution, for having allowed his relatives to approach Muammar Gaddafi's Libya to finance his victorious 2007 campaign.

Mr. Sarkozy has appealed the conviction. He has been incarcerated since Tuesday, a first in the history of the French Republic for a former president.
