After giving birth in secret, a young Italian woman buried her two newborns in her parents' garden. She has just been sentenced.

An Italian court on Friday sentenced a 22-year-old woman to more than 24 years in prison. The Parma Assize Court largely followed the prosecution's request, which had sought a 26-year sentence for Chiara P. The law student had secretly given birth to two children and then buried them in her parents' garden.

After giving birth alone on August 7, 2024, in her parents' house, where she still lives, Chiara buried the child in the garden. The baby's body was discovered the next day by the 22-year-old woman's grandmother.

The investigation reveals another gruesome discovery

The subsequent investigation revealed that the young woman had already given birth to a child in May 2023 and had also buried it in the family garden. During a search of the property, authorities discovered the remains of a second newborn.

In a particularly shocking turn of events, Chiara, after giving birth to her second child, went out partying with friends, according to her own account, and returned later to bury the infant. The following day, she left with her family for New York, where she spent several weeks. She was only questioned by the police upon her return to Italy in mid-August 2024.

Convicted of murder in only one case

The court ruled that the 22-year-old woman could only be convicted of premeditated murder in one of the two cases and sentenced her to 24 years and 3 months in prison. Chiara currently still lives in the family home, is under house arrest, and must wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.

During the trial, the father of the second child, Emanuele, also 22 years old, said he was deeply affected: "I would have liked to keep this child. I would have raised him alone, my mother would have helped me." He emphasized that he was unaware of the pregnancy.

The public prosecutor's office emphasized that Chiara's parents were also unaware of the pregnancy or the events. Therefore, they are not suspected. What could have driven Chiara to commit such acts remains unknown. Those close to her describe her as an exemplary and responsible young woman.
