Kidal (Mali) : Les rebelles touaregs annoncent le retrait des soldats russes d'Africa Corps
Tuareg rebels announced on Sunday, April 26, 2026, that they had reached an agreement allowing Russian soldiers from the Africa Corps to withdraw from the city of Kidal in northern Mali. The armed groups claim to now have "full" control of this strategic city.
"An agreement has been reached to allow the army and its allies in the Africa Corps to leave Camp 2, where they had been holed up since Saturday," a Tuareg rebel official told AFP. He added that the city of Kidal is now entirely under their control.
On the ground, the situation seems to be confirmed by local accounts. "We saw a military convoy leave, but we don't know the details of the situation. It is the fighters of the armed groups who now occupy the streets," a resident of Kidal told AFP.
This withdrawal marks a major turning point in the Malian crisis, just months after the Malian armed forces (FAMa) and their Russian partners regained control of this historic rebel stronghold in November 2023.
