Mauritanie: sept militaires engagés dans le sauvetage d'un bateau de la marine portés disparus
Contact has been lost with the seven sailors since Tuesday night, according to the ministry.
Their "boat was participating in a rescue operation of a national navy patrol boat immobilized by nets in an area located 30 miles north of the port of Friendship" (that of Nouakchott), explained the ministry, which specifies that "the last contact established with the crew dates back to Tuesday at 11:00 PM" (local and GMT).
"The alert has been given to the naval and air forces to launch search operations," the ministry added.
These search operations continued on Thursday.
Fishing nets, often abandoned among other materials on the ocean floor off the coast of Mauritania, regularly cause significant pollution and navigational problems. Some nets become entangled in boat propellers, immobilizing them at sea and forcing them to send out distress signals.
When the rescue team arrives, they either bring the boat back to the nearest port, or they carry out a complicated operation to free the propeller in order to allow the boat to regain its mobility.
The naval patrol boat that had suffered this problem was able to be brought back to the port of Nouakchott following the rescue operation.
