Mort du ministre de la défense du Mali : Le gouvernement confirme et explique les circonstances
The Malian government has officially confirmed the tragic death of Lieutenant General Sadio Camara. He was, until now, the country's Minister of State, Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
"Following the cowardly terrorist incidents that took place on the morning of April 25, 2026, a car bomb driven by a suicide bomber targeted the residence of the minister, who engaged in exchanges with the assailants, some of whom he managed to eliminate," said Brigadier General Issa Ousmane Coulibaly, government spokesperson.
In a statement read on Malian national television, he reported that during intense clashes, the late Minister of Defense was wounded and then transported to the hospital where he unfortunately succumbed.
In addition, the collapse of his residence caused further casualties, and the destruction of a nearby mosque resulted in the deaths of some worshippers who were inside.
At the highest level of the State, Assimi Goïta, the President of the Transition, paid a vibrant tribute to this general officer who, in his eyes, "always characterized himself by his fighting spirit, his fearlessness, his humanism, his professionalism, his commendable record in national defense."
Therefore, he decided that the deceased General Sadio Camara would be entitled to a state funeral.
