A still deep kidnapping crisis

Despite this release, Nigeria continues to face a serious security crisis. Boko Haram, its factions, criminal groups, and bandit networks still use kidnappings as a means of exerting pressure, raising funds, or maintaining local control.

In the northeast, the jihadist insurgency has been ongoing since 2009. It has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions. Civilians often live amidst attacks, displacement, and the fear of further hostage-takings.

The release of 360 people therefore represents a major relief for the families involved. But it also underscores the scale of the challenge facing the Nigerian authorities: to ensure the long-term security of the villages, prevent further kidnappings, and support the survivors after their return.

For many communities in Borno, the priority remains simple: to be able to live, work and send children to school without fear of another attack.
