Tentative de coup d'État au Bénin : Assaut contre la résidence du Président Talon
Gunfire erupted early this morning in the heart of Cotonou, Benin, and helicopters are circling overhead. According to information gathered by Jeune Afrique, it all began around Sunday, December 7 (local time).
A group of soldiers attempted to storm President Patrice Talon's residence while he was there, but according to a source close to the Beninese president, they have been repelled for the time being. They did, however, seize control of the national television station, which broadcast their message repeatedly on Sunday morning. Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri is believed to be leading them.
The military says it has established a "Military Committee for Refoundation." They announce the suspension of the Constitution, as well as all institutions and political parties, and also affirm the closure of Benin's borders.
They denounce "the governance of Patrice Talon and the deprivation of certain citizens of their right to choose their candidate", but also "the passing of crisis-generating laws, the sending into exile of certain citizens, the arrests indiscriminately and the incarceration of citizens".
In power since 2016, Patrice Talon was preparing to hand over the reins of Benin: the next presidential election is scheduled for April, and he will not be running for re-election. He has designated a successor, Romuald Wadagni.
