Bientôt des smartphones et des ordinateurs "Made in Sénégal" : Le plan d'attaque du Sénégal Digital Factory
Senegal has taken another step in its digital strategy with the establishment, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, of the technical committee for the "Senegal Digital Factory" program. This body will oversee the implementation of this flagship initiative of the technological "New Deal," aimed at creating a local electronics manufacturing industry.

The goal is to "create a manufacturing industry that allows us to be independent in the production of laptops, smartphones, and other electronic devices," explains Roger Thiam. Ultimately, the aim is to produce "affordable smartphones" and "laptops made in Senegal," adds the Director of Digital Economy and Partnerships at the Ministry of Communication, Telecommunications, and Digital Affairs.
The technical committee brings together several stakeholders, including representatives from the government, the private sector, academia, and digital technology professionals. Roger Thiam (previously referred to as Diame in the reported remarks) champions this inclusive approach: "We were determined to break with the practice of designing programs without involving the target audience from the initial planning stages." Young people are, in fact, central to the initiative. "They remain key," he emphasized, stressing that they will be involved in both the design and implementation of the program, particularly within the future production units.
Furthermore, the authorities, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), announced the establishment of the first laboratory at Amadou Mahtar Mbow University (UAM) in Diamniadio. "On April 27, 2026, we will inaugurate the first Fab Lab of the Senegal Digital Factory network," announced Roger Thiam. These laboratories will allow young people to design and manufacture various products using digital technologies. "You will discover laboratories where young people will be manufacturing phone cases using 3D printing," he explained.
This initiative aims to reduce dependence on imports, in a context where "West Africa imports approximately $7 billion" worth of electronic components and equipment. Ultimately, the program will be extended "to all eight economic hubs of Senegal," concludes the Director of Digital Economy and Partnerships.
