Cristiano Ronaldo's attendance at the dinner hosted by Trump for Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman last Tuesday continues to generate controversy. The Al Nassr star is facing a barrage of criticism. Many find it unacceptable to see him associating with Mohammed bin Salman, accused of being responsible for the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and Donald Trump, a highly controversial figure whom he claims to admire.
"Hypocrites! You are hypocrites!"
Katia Aveiro, the sister of the Portuguese star, took these criticisms against her brother very badly. In a long Instagram post, she lashed out at those responsible for these attacks, calling them "hypocrites."
“He went to the White House and you’re making a huge deal out of it. Hypocrites! You’re all hypocrites! Suddenly, a collective hysteria gripped everyone, a hysteria so intense it was frightening. It was almost as if Cristiano had announced the end of the world. It’s surreal and embarrassing to see certain groups panicking, especially in my country. As soon as Ronaldo does something that doesn’t fit into your little boxes, you act as if the entire planet is governed by your political sensitivities. For some of you, a visit to the White House is like a diplomatic crime: moral, spiritual, and galactic,” Katia charged.
"You remind me of how Christ was treated by Judas."
She points out that her brother needed "no favors, no party, no pre-orchestrated rhetoric, no ideology" to achieve fame. He "needed only hard work" to "build a career that no television program, no opinion puppet, no expert could even dream of replicating," Ms. Aveiro asserts, before specifically attacking the Portuguese who criticize her brother.
“Cristiano Ronaldo has done more for Portugal than any debate show, conference, commentator, or anyone who complains on the internet. He has put Portugal at the table of the best… You remind me of how Christ was treated by Judas. My country, unfortunately, is a country of Judas! I’m not talking about everyone, of course…” she said.
