On March 12th, the people of Benin awoke to wonderful news that sparked widespread jubilation. The young Beninese artist, OPA, was named the winner of the 2026 RFI Discovery Prize. A singer-songwriter with exceptional talent, OPA captivated the jury, headed by MC Solaar. He quickly gained public attention thanks to his distinctive voice and high-quality work. Hailing from Bohicon, Benin, OPA offers a unique blend of Afro-R&B inspired by the legendary Fela Kuti, infused with traditional African rhythms. Since 2024, OPA has been making waves with his hit song "Goslow," which became a resounding success in his country, establishing him as a rising star in the music scene. In this exclusive interview with Seneweb from Benin, the artist discusses his beginnings, his career, and his future projects.

OPA, tell us about your character?

I am a singer-songwriter, my style is afrobeat which I fuse with several other musical styles and in which I bring out sounds from my home to obtain a style that is both rooted in my origins and open to the world.

When did you start making music and what is your style?

I've been making music since I was very young, but my career really started in 2022, so it's been about four years. I've been influenced by artists like Angélique Kidjo, Poly Rythmo, and Sagbohan Danial. I often talk about love and the realities of life. The most recurring musical style in my music is Afrobeat.

You have been awarded the RFI 2026 Discovery Prize, how did you react to this news?

I welcomed it with great joy and pride. It truly gives me pleasure to represent my country on this level. I was overcome by a flood of emotions; I literally burst into tears on the phone during the live interview with RFI.

What are your plans after winning the RFI Discovery Prize?

To make the most of the opportunities this distinction offers me. To collaborate with other international artists.
