[Portrait] Boubou Niang : De l'OCI au Darfour, quarante ans au cœur du réacteur diplomatique mondial
From Brussels to Doha, by way of the hushed corridors of the OIC, the Senegalese career diplomat Boubou Niang embodied, for over forty years, the excellence of a diplomacy based on dialogue and mediation. A portrait of a man of conviction who dedicated himself to global stability.

In the discreet world of diplomacy, some names resonate with a natural authority. Boubou Niang's is one of them. An eminent career diplomat, this son of Senegal has navigated four decades of geopolitical upheaval with one constant: his unwavering faith in multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Excellence as a starting point
It all began at the University of Dakar, then at the Center for Professional and Administrative Training (CFPA). In 1970, the young Niang not only obtained his diploma in the diplomatic section; he graduated at the top of his class, the sixth graduating class, across all sections. This academic distinction, within a rigorous curriculum of political science and government, was only the prelude to a meteoric rise.
In 1973, he cut his teeth in Europe as First Secretary at the Senegalese Embassy in Brussels. It was there, and later in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (1977-1978), that he honed his understanding of bilateral relations. But it was in multilateralism that Boubou Niang would truly demonstrate his talent.
The pillar of the OIC
In 1978, he joined the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). What was meant to be a stepping stone became a life's mission. For twenty years, from 1978 to 1998, he served as an advisor to five successive secretaries-general.
This exceptional longevity, in an institution encompassing the majority of the world's Muslim countries, testifies to a rare trust and an unparalleled capacity for adaptation.
At the heart of African and Middle Eastern issues, he has established himself as a recognized player in the most complex diplomatic processes, handling political science and the art of mediation with equal ease.

From 2004 to 2013, Boubou Niang played a central role in resolving the humanitarian crisis of the Darfur conflict in Sudan. He served as senior political advisor to five special envoys and chief mediators, appointed successively by the African Union, the United Nations, and Qatar to lead the peace talks.
A legacy of dialogue
Having concluded his distinguished career as an advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Boubou Niang continues to contribute his expertise to international diplomacy from Doha in his retirement. A man of dialogue and conviction, he is described by his peers as a skilled diplomat whose profound understanding of political issues is honed by unparalleled field experience.

At a time when the African continent and the Middle East are facing new security challenges, Boubou Niang's career reminds us that diplomacy is not just a matter of protocol, but above all, of humanity. In forty years of service, he tirelessly built bridges where others saw walls, remaining true to his original mission: to serve peace and stability, with the reserve and elegance that characterize great public servants.
Indeed, men and women are like eras. There are those who leave a silent but indelible mark on history. They are champions worthy of their land, patriots imbued with honor, who work and retire with the elegance of their experience and the nobility of their mission. They build quietly and bequeath a model of integrity to their descendants and to contemporary generations.
