El-Hadji Ahmadou Barro Ndiéguene, fondateur du quartier Keur Mame El Hadji

A man of God of exceptional stature, a man of faith and peace, Tafsir Ahmadou Barro Ndiégnene is a scholar of Islam born in Kassass, a village near Kaffrine, where he learned, very early and quickly, the Holy Quran which he recited seven times from his venerated father, Tafsir Mouhammadou Ndiéguene, disciple of Cheikhoul Seydi El Hadj Oumar Foutiyou Tall who transmitted to him, during his journey in Sine-Saloum, the Wird (initiation) and the Lidiaza (license conferring the title of Moukhadam, synonymous with representative guide) of the Tidjanya brotherhood.

Upon the death of his illustrious father, whose mausoleum in Kassass receives thousands of pilgrims every year, Tafsir Ahmadou Barro Ndiégnene decided to go and deepen his knowledge in Rufisque with his uncle Tafsir Ibrahima Cissé, who had been recommended to him by his father during his lifetime. It was in 1865 that Tafsir Ahmadou Barro Ndiégnene settled in Thiès. First, in the Nginth-Escale district, near the first gendarmerie post at the time, where he created the first mosque in the city of Thiès and its Daara (Koranic school). He was then to move to join, following a healthy and enlightened vision of a man of God, a small baobab located further east of his first home and which was to constitute, over time, the great ancestral tree around which radiates, today, a large district called "Keur Mame Al Hadj", from the name of its illustrious founder, a symbolic link of respect for Islam and its teachings between the other districts of the city of Thiès, the villages and the surrounding towns.

Tafsir Barro Ndiégnene was a contemporary and friend of illustrious figures of Islam, including Thierno Daha Cheikh Oumar Tall, son of the great master of Fouta, Serigne Diabel Ndiaye of Keur Madaro (Thiès), Seydi El Hadji Malick Sy of Tivaouane, Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké of Touba, Cheikh Mame Thierno Dramé of Amdalaye (Ndande), Cheikh Al Islam El-Hadji Abdoulaye Niasse of Kaolack, Serigne Amary Ndack Seck of Thiénaba, Serigne Thierno Idrissa Kandji of Diourbel, etc. With these latter, the great sheikh of Keur Mame Al Hadji has established indissoluble bonds of friendship, family and fraternity. Joined by a multitude of men and women in search of a master and a spiritual guide, he devoted his life to the search for the extension, popularization and influence of Islam through teaching and education of the masses in a region of the country where paganism, fetishism and total obscurantism had won over the masses.
