Niakhar : L’agroécologie au service de la résilience et de la restauration des écosystèmes

The preservation of ecosystems, along with securing livelihoods, has become imperative for some communities facing climate change. In the commune of Niakhar, for example, the Resilience and Reforestation for the Safeguarding of Territories and Ecosystems (Ripostes) project falls within this framework. The project aims to restore ecosystems and promote sustainable agricultural practices in silvopastoral zones and the groundnut basin. While some communities have seen successes, others are still experiencing delays in implementation.

Strong and participatory local involvement

During a joint visit by the Technical Committee and the Steering Committee, the Prefect of Niakhar, Moussa Ba, commended the participatory and inclusive approach of the project. "You could have limited yourselves to administrative reports, but you chose to come to the field to see the realities firsthand. This approach strengthens the motivation of the beneficiaries, who see their efforts recognized," he stated.

The prefect noted that Senegal faces major environmental challenges, including soil degradation, soil salinization, and desertification. He emphasized that RIPOSTES builds upon existing programs such as the Environmental Training and Information Program (PFIE), focusing on: securing school grounds, planting trees to improve living conditions, and raising awareness among younger generations about environmental protection. In Niakhar, these efforts are reflected in initiatives such as Tree Day and Basic Education Week, which this year focuses on securing school grounds.

Agroecology, the engine of local development

The local representative, Mame Birame Sene, highlighted the tangible impacts of agroecology on the region. He cited, among other things, "the establishment of successful agroecological farms, facilitating access to land for young people and women, and promoting social and family mediation to resolve land-related conflicts." He then gave "a striking example concerning a married woman who, according to local traditions, did not have access to land. Thanks to a mediation process, her in-laws granted her one hectare, illustrating the social and transformative role of the project." According to him, "the project demonstrates how agroecology, environmental education, and local mobilization can tangibly transform communities and strengthen their capacity to face climate challenges."

Training, empowerment and dissemination of best practices

The training provided to young people has strengthened their skills, transforming them into true ambassadors of agroecology. This momentum has enabled the integration of agroecology into municipal development plans, the strengthening of local policies for youth training and employment, and increased involvement of women in the processing of agricultural products. Technical services, particularly water and forestry services, have supported assisted natural regeneration, environmental preservation, and the improvement of agricultural practices. Special emphasis has been placed on environmental education in schools, preparing children to become responsible citizens committed to protecting ecosystems.

Assessment and outlook

Having reached an advanced stage, the RIPOSTES project has identified successes, drawn lessons from challenges, and strengthened collaboration between institutions, technical partners, and local communities. An extension of the project has been granted to finalize ongoing activities, consolidate achievements, address shortcomings, and accelerate the implementation of remaining activities. Local communities, elected officials, and the administration remain fully committed to this initiative, contributing to ecosystem restoration and the resilience of the Sine-Saloum region and the groundnut basin.
