He chose the wrong place to commit a theft. Ibrahima Ba, a cleaning technician at the Dakar courthouse, was caught red-handed stealing equipment. Tried this Friday in the Dakar court for flagrant offenses, the defendant was sentenced to six months in prison, one month of which is suspended, for theft.
It was a rather unusual scene at the Dakar courthouse. According to the public prosecutor, Ibrahima Ba, a cleaning technician, went to the courthouse one Sunday with the intention of stealing equipment. He tried to take fountain and air conditioner compressors. But his plan was quickly thwarted. He was apprehended by gendarmes as he was trying to remove the items from the premises.
In court, the defendant initially denied the charges, claiming he had retrieved the materials from the waste collection point. However, faced with persistent questioning and on the advice of his lawyer, Mamadou Ciss, he eventually admitted to the theft.
The public prosecutor requested a two-year prison sentence. The defense, for its part, pleaded for leniency. In its deliberations, the court ultimately reclassified the charges as simple theft before sentencing Ibrahima Ba to six months' imprisonment, one month of which was suspended.
