Dialogue de sourds : Pourquoi la réunion de 10 heures entre l'État et les transporteurs a tourné au fiasco
The crisis in the road transport sector seems to be dragging on. Despite a marathon meeting of more than ten hours between the Minister of Infrastructure and Land and Air Transport and representatives of the Federation of Road Transport Unions of Senegal, no concrete agreement was reached to end the protest.
Beginning around 11 a.m., the meeting dragged on until nearly 9 p.m., but failed to meet the union representatives' expectations. Alassane Ndoye, president of the federation affiliated with the Senegalese workers' union, expressed his disappointment as he left the meeting room. None of the ten demands listed in the strike notice were met.
“We are Senegalese, we feel sorry for the Senegalese, but the government must also feel sorry for the Senegalese. Out of 10 points, you cannot have a single point of satisfaction,” he insisted.
Referral to ad hoc committees
The crux of the problem lies in the government's proposal to address most of the demands within an ad hoc commission. For Fallou Samb, secretary general of the federation, this option is not the right one. According to him, the transport workers are waiting for concrete commitments that they can present to their members to justify a return to work. As things stand, the unions have received only "promises to continue working."
The watchword remains "until further notice"
Faced with what they consider a lack of real progress, union leaders have decided to maintain the pressure. Although the initial strike period was coming to an end, the strike order remains in effect.
The outcome of the conflict now depends on the rank and file. Union representatives went to their headquarters to brief the drivers and transporters on the situation. While Fallou Samb did not rule out lifting the strike order overnight if the rank and file decided to do so, he reiterated that, as they left the meeting, "the strike continues."
The situation therefore remains very uncertain for road users, who are waiting on the decisions that will be taken in the coming hours by workers in the sector.
