Sud-Est du Sénégal : La gendarmerie renforce son maillage sécuritaire avec de nouvelles bases du GARSI à Saraya.
The security apparatus in eastern Senegal has reached a new milestone. The national gendarmerie inaugurated three new support points for the Rapid Action Surveillance and Intervention Group (GARSI 2) in the department of Saraya, Kédougou region, on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 April 2026.
Located in Saïensoutou, Moussala and Médina Bafé, these infrastructures aim to consolidate the presence of defense and security forces in a strategic area marked by significant security and cross-border issues.
The inauguration ceremonies were presided over by the Minister of the Armed Forces, Birame Diop, in the presence of several high-ranking authorities, including the Governor of Kédougou, the High Commander of the National Gendarmerie, military, administrative and judicial officials, as well as the Ambassador of the European Union and many local people.
This strong mobilization demonstrates the strategic importance given to this initiative by the State of Senegal and its partners.
The construction of these new infrastructures is part of the Security Strengthening Support Programme (PARSEC), a result of cooperation between Senegal and the European Union.
This partnership aims to improve the operational capabilities of security forces, particularly in sensitive and border areas.
A crossroads region, Kédougou is considered a crucial area due to the economic, human, and commercial flows that pass through it. It faces multiple challenges, particularly related to gold mining, cross-border trafficking, and security threats in the sub-region.
In this context, the establishment of these GARSI support points represents a major step forward. It will notably reduce the response times of security forces; strengthen their ability to react to threats; improve border area surveillance; and bring defense forces closer to the population.
These new infrastructures complement the efforts already undertaken by the State, notably with the inauguration in August 2025 of the Kédougou gendarmerie legion, as well as new units such as the research section and the Saraya company. They reflect a clear commitment to sustainably strengthening security in this part of the country.
Speaking on this occasion, the Minister of the Armed Forces delivered a strong message to the deployed troops. He urged them to demonstrate professionalism and dedication in carrying out their mission, reminding them of their crucial role in preserving territorial integrity and the security of the population.
He also stressed their responsibility as representatives of the state to citizens, emphasizing that their presence must reassure the population and guarantee the free movement of people and their goods.
With these new facilities, Senegal is strengthening its security apparatus in a strategic region, confirming its determination to face security challenges and guarantee stability in this part of Senegal.
