Souveraineté et sécurité alimentaire : Le Sénégal amorce le virage historique de l’agroécologie
The opening of the 5th edition of the Senegal Agroecology Days (JAES), this Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the Museum of Black Civilizations, marks a decisive step in the policy of food sovereignty and security. After years of tentative steps, the State of Senegal and agroecology stakeholders have decided to move from theory to concrete institutionalization to guarantee the country's food sovereignty.
By co-chairing the opening ceremony of the JAES 2026, Dr. Mabouba Diagne, Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock, and Dr. El Hadj Abdourahmane Diouf, Minister of the Environment and Ecological Transition, sent a strong signal. They forged a strategic alliance between their two ministries. This governmental partnership is essential to address the urgent need for food sovereignty.
This year's theme, "From Vision to Action: Institutionalizing Agroecology for Sustainable Food Systems," was not chosen at random. In a world shaken by the instability of global markets—caused by conflicts and pandemics—and the vagaries of the climate, Senegal is betting on sustainability in its quest for food sovereignty. For Minister Abdourahmane Diouf, agroecology is much more than a farming method; it is a "strategic response" capable of reconciling productivity and social inclusion.
The key announcement of the day was the development of the National Strategy for Agroecological Transition (SNTAE). This reference document, jointly developed by the two ministries, aims to strengthen the coherence of public policies and the coordination of initiatives on the ground. The objective is to make agroecology the foundation of Senegal's food sovereignty.
The voice of civil society, championed by the Dynamics for an Agroecological Transition in Senegal (DyTAES), resonated powerfully. Dr. Laure Tall emphasized that agroecology is no longer a concept that needs justifying or explaining; "it is a proven solution." "The real challenge today is scaling it up," she stressed, emphasizing the need to translate rhetoric into concrete budgets and land and seed reforms.
This transition will not take place from offices in Dakar. The summit highlighted the central role of DyTAELs (Territorial Dynamics for a Local Agroecological Transition). These structures embody the decentralization of the agroecological transition, proving that the most effective solutions often emerge from dialogue between mayors, producers, and local researchers.
Bringing together leading stakeholders such as the FAO, the CNCR, the Association of Mayors of Senegal, and operational branches of the state like SAED, these days will be intense moments of reflection and exchange on the food system. While the first two days are devoted to technical and political roundtables among 400 experts, the closing day expects more than 1,000 participants next Thursday.
