Pr Aliou Thiongane (Pnlp) : « Tout n’est pas encore gagné dans la lutte contre le paludisme »
On the occasion of World Malaria Day, Professor Aliou Thiongane, coordinator of the National Malaria Control Program (PNLP), reviews the progress made, while calling for maximum vigilance to be maintained to achieve the goal of elimination by 2030.

How does the PNLP plan to mark this day?
Even though physical activities were postponed, we were determined to maintain a strong media presence. Radio, television, print media, and digital platforms are all being used to raise awareness and provide information. The goal is to share the results achieved and to reiterate that the fight against malaria remains a national priority.
What are the most significant advances?
The results are significant. In 2025, the incidence of malaria fell to 12.8 per thousand inhabitants, compared to 22.8 per thousand in 2024. Mortality was halved, dropping from 314 to 151 deaths in one year. Long-term progress is even more striking: between 2000 and 2025, the proportionate morbidity rate fell from 35% to 1.4%, and the proportionate mortality rate to 0.7%. Today, more than 92% of health districts are in the pre-elimination phase according to WHO criteria.
There are still some persistent challenges, can you elaborate on them?
Some transmission hotspots remain active, particularly in Touba, Diourbel, Kaolack, Kédougou, Tambacounda and Kolda. Specific populations, such as transhumant herders, gold miners and talibés, are also more exposed. Added to this are emerging challenges, including the effects of climate change and the risks of malaria reintroduction across borders.
What is your strategy for 2026?
This year's theme, "Motivated to Eliminate Malaria: Now We Can, Now We Must," reflects our commitment. We emphasize simple actions: sleeping under an insecticide-treated bed net, seeking prompt medical attention if you develop a fever, and adhering to prescribed treatments. We also stress the crucial role of the media and the community in this fight.
Could you elaborate on the outlook for the coming years?
Our ambition is to achieve a malaria-free Senegal. This requires strengthening surveillance, intensifying interventions, and encouraging innovation. The progress made is significant, but it must be consolidated.
Can malaria be prevented?
Yes, it is a preventable and curable disease. But it requires constant vigilance. I urge every citizen to adopt the right habits and join the fight. Together, we can achieve this goal.
