US President Donald Trump was at the United Nations headquarters in New York yesterday, Tuesday. The leader was accompanied by his wife Melania, who wore a white suit and high heels.
As the couple were about to board the escalator, it suddenly stopped working. Trump and his wife had to walk the rest of the way up.
"If the first lady had not been in great shape, she would have fallen."
The American president did not fail to mention the incident in his speech at the UN podium. "All I got from the United Nations was a faulty escalator. If the first lady hadn't been in great shape, she would have fallen," the Republican said.
The White House later denounced this as an intentional act, saying it had entrusted the matter to the Secret Service.
The UN, for its part, claims that the outage was caused by a member of the US president's delegation. "The escalator's safety mechanism was inadvertently activated by someone who was in front of the president," the world organization explained.
This does not seem likely to convince the American presidency.
The White House is still furious
His spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, reproduced, on X, an excerpt from an article in the "Sunday Times", in which UN staff members joked about the fact that the escalator should be deactivated as soon as Trump arrived to make him feel the consequences of his budget cuts.
"If we find that these UN employees were willfully trying to detain the President of the United States and the First Lady, they better be held accountable," Leavitt said.
The other incident that put Donald Trump in a bad mood was the teleprompter malfunction. During the first ten minutes of the president's speech, the machine was not working, prompting the Republican to improvise.
According to Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, "the teleprompter for the American president is managed by the White House."
