Addiction au Pari-foot : un ancien militaire se fait passer pour sa femme et ...
Mb. Ngom, a former soldier turned inveterate gambler, discreetly retrieved the phone of his wife, a midwife by profession. On the phone, he installed the 1XBet app, multiplied his bets... but suffered a series of losses. Within days, his savings disappeared.
Disoriented and determined to replenish his depleted account, Ngom devises a scheme to deceive his wife's entourage. He then decides to impersonate her. Using his wife's phone, he contacts several of her colleagues and friends, demanding money in the name of supposed urgent needs. The ruse works. One by one, the victims fall for the trap and send him money via Wave.
In total, 267,000 CFA francs fell into the former soldier's pocket, according to L'Observateur. But, the newspaper points out, the relief was short-lived because two of the duped people, BY Boubane and Bindia, eventually caught on to the scam and decided to file a complaint.
Upon receiving the information, the police immediately launched an investigation. Investigators, led by Commander Diop, sent a request to Wave to verify the details of the account that had received the funds. The results came in: the number was indeed that of the former soldier.
Faced with irrefutable evidence, he had no choice but to admit the facts. Picked up by the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group, he pleaded guilty, admitted his addiction to betting on football, and asked for clemency from the courts. But his confession was not enough to save him: brought before the court, he was placed in custody and now awaiting trial, L'Observateur adds.
