Two American soldiers taking part in the international exercise "African Lion 2026" went missing Saturday night in southern Morocco, the Moroccan army and the U.S. Africa Command (Africom) announced Sunday, adding that search operations were underway.

The 22nd edition of this joint military exercise, organized by the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) in partnership with the American armed forces, was officially launched on Monday in Agadir, in the south of the kingdom, the FAR announced.

"Two American servicemen participating in African Lion 2026 went missing on May 2, 2026 at around 9:00 PM (8:00 PM GMT), near a cliff at Cap Draa, in the Tan-Tan region," they said Sunday on Facebook.

"Moroccan, American and other participating countries' forces (...) immediately launched coordinated search and rescue operations, including land, air and sea assets," they added in a statement.

For its part, Africom stated that an investigation had been opened to determine the circumstances of this disappearance.

Scheduled to run until May 8, the large-scale exercise brings together nearly 5,000 military personnel from more than 40 countries, as well as experts specializing in security and defense.
