Afrique du Sud : Bellarmine, le fils de l'ex-président zimbabwéen Robert Mugabe, condamné
In South Africa, Bellarmine, the youngest son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Gabriel Mugabe, was fined 600,000 rand (over 20 million CFA francs) for violating firearms and immigration regulations. The sentence was handed down Wednesday morning by the Alexandra Criminal Court (a township in the Johannesburg suburbs).
They both pleaded guilty.
Bellarmine and his cousin Tobias Matonhodze were accused of attempted murder of an employee on their property in Johannesburg. The victim, a gardener, had been shot twice.
In court, Bellarmine admitted to violating South African gun laws by pointing a weapon at the victim. He also pleaded guilty to illegally residing in South Africa.
His cousin, Tobias Matonhodze, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, obstruction of justice, illegal possession of a firearm, and immigration violations. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
Escorted to the airport
Judge Renier Boshoff noted that the two men were first-time offenders and that their decision to plead guilty was a mitigating factor.
Bellarmine Mugabe will be escorted to OR Tambo Airport where he will arrange his return to Zimbabwe. His cousin will also be deported from South Africa after serving his sentence.
