Afrique du Sud : un crocodile suspecté d’avoir dévoré un homme, hélitreuillé par la police

In northeastern South Africa, an extraordinary search operation mobilized law enforcement after a businessman disappeared, swept away by the swollen waters of the Komati River. Faced with hostile conditions and the presence of crocodiles, the search took an exceptional turn.

Police deployed drones and helicopters to survey the area, spotting a small island where several reptiles were basking. According to Captain Johan Potgieter, commander of a diving unit, the experience gained allowed them to identify an animal exhibiting suspicious behavior: an abnormally distended belly and unusual immobility despite the noise of the aircraft.

The crocodile, measuring 4.5 meters long and weighing approximately 500 kilograms, was shot as a safety precaution. Captain Potgieter was then lowered by helicopter to get as close as possible to the carcass, in an environment that remained highly dangerous. "A crocodile's head is not the ideal place to approach it," he told News24.

Using a rope, the officer managed to secure the animal before being pulled out of the water with it. The reptile was then transported to Kruger National Park, where examination of its intestines revealed the presence of human remains. DNA analysis is underway to determine if they belong to the missing man.

The investigation was launched after the victim's vehicle was found abandoned near a submerged bridge. Upon arrival, law enforcement found no trace of the driver, suggesting he had been swept away by the current.

In addition to body fragments, authorities also found several shoes in the animal's digestive system. A disturbing discovery, but not formal proof of further attacks, as Captain Potgieter explained: "A crocodile swallows anything it can."

Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, acting police chief, praised the officer's courage and professionalism, highlighting the exceptional nature of this mission carried out under extreme conditions.
