Bakary Yaou Sangaré, ministre nigérien des Affaires étrangères : « L’aide alimentaire, on n’en veut plus »
In an interview given on Friday, May 8, 2026 to the Nigerien Radio Television (RTN), the Nigerien Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, declared that his country no longer accepted food aid.
"We don't want food aid anymore. Niger will no longer accept food aid. You cannot be sovereign if you cannot feed yourself. If you cannot feed yourself at home, you cannot be sovereign," declared the head of Nigerien diplomacy.
Niger cannot drink its own oil
To ensure food self-sufficiency for Nigeriens, the government of General Tiani launched a large-scale irrigation program in 2024, recalls Mr. Sangaré.
With a budget of 521.1 billion CFA francs, this program aims to revolutionize the country's agriculture by 2027 by developing and rehabilitating irrigated areas.
According to Minister Yaou Sangaré, the government is convinced that the country cannot consume its own oil. He recalled what Gaddafi had told the Libyan people about oil.
“When Gaddafi came to power, there was oil. He had more oil than Niger, around 2 million barrels a day. He knew what he wanted to do. He had anticipated the challenges he would face. He sought to ensure his country’s self-sufficiency. And he told people: ‘If we can’t feed ourselves, we’ll put an embargo on our oil. Nobody wants to buy our oil. Are we going to drink it? If we have food and nobody buys our oil, at least we won’t starve,’” recounted the Nigerien Minister of Foreign Affairs.
