Bénin : Pourquoi le président élu Romuald Wadagni ne prêtera pas serment à Porto-Novo
It had become a tradition. Since Benin's independence, successive presidents have always taken their oaths of office in Porto-Novo. This year, that tradition will be temporarily broken.
Romuald Wadagni's inauguration ceremony will take place in Cotonou, at the Palais des Congrès.
"It will be physically impossible to hold the ceremony there."
The Beninese government made this decision during the Council of Ministers meeting on May 13th. It justified its decision by citing the unavailability of the Charles de Gaulle Stadium in Porto-Novo, which usually hosts the event.
“The Council of Ministers, at its meeting on October 15, 2025, decided to undertake the rehabilitation work on the Charles de Gaulle Stadium. Since then, the related studies have taken longer than expected, so the renovation work has only recently begun. It will be physically impossible to organize the said ceremony there,” explained the spokesperson for the executive branch, Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji.
He assures that at the end of the works, the stadium "will regain its splendor and will be able to host this event again in the future."
