Bissau: la junte dit avoir pris le pouvoir pour éviter un "bain de sang"
On November 26, the day before the expected announcement of the provisional results of the presidential and legislative elections in this Portuguese-speaking West African country, the military overthrew outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, in power since 2020, and suspended the ongoing electoral process.
The junta has since appointed General Horta N'Tam, a close associate of Mr. Embalo, as president of a transition intended to last one year.
In a statement to the press on Friday evening, the head of the junta claimed that the coup had "prevented a bloodbath between supporters of rival candidates".
"We refute the allegations that the coup interrupted the electoral process," said General N'Tam.
Both the camp of outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and that of opposition candidate Fernando Dias de Costa claimed victory at the time of the military takeover.
This is the fifth coup d'état in Guinea-Bissau since its independence from Portugal in 1974. The country lives to the rhythm of political crises and has experienced a plethora of coup attempts.
"The current electoral model has not been effective in resolving the political and military crises in Guinea-Bissau," argued the head of the junta, who asserted that "elections are never a solution."
Last week, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) threatened to impose "targeted sanctions" on anyone who tries to obstruct the return to civilian rule in Guinea-Bissau.
A delegation of ECOWAS chiefs of staff is expected in Bissau this Sunday.
A failed coup attempt in Benin two weeks ago led ECOWAS to intervene militarily.
The regional bloc had already been shaken by a series of coups between 2020 and 2023 in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger, countries still ruled by military juntas.

Vrais yambaars qui devaient arrêter Emballo au lieu de l aider dans ses forfaitures. Maintenant ces yabaars nous parlent de bain de sang, alors que les gens votaient.
Il fallait juste sécurirer les urnes au lieu de faire un faux coup d'État. S il fallait faire coup de pour éviter le bain, vous auriez dû le faire quand Emballo corrompait le droit et faisait des fortures dans l'impunité.
