Congo: Sassou Nguesso annonce sa candidature à l'élection présidentielle
The president of Congo-Brazzaville, Denis Sassou Nguesso, who at 82 years old has accumulated more than forty years in power, announced on Thursday his candidacy for the presidential election scheduled for March 15 in the small oil-rich Central African country, according to a statement.
"I will be a candidate in the presidential election," he declared to a crowd of several thousand people gathered during a trip to Ignié (south), according to a statement from his team sent to AFP.
The presidential movement (Congolese Labour Party, PCT) had designated Mr. Sassou as the party's "natural candidate" at its congress at the end of December. The PCT is the main political party in the majority.
The election, initially scheduled for March 22, will now be held on March 15. The vote by law enforcement will take place a few days before the official election date, so that they can guarantee public order on election day.
Denis Sassou Nguesso ruled Congo-Brazzaville, a small oil-rich country in Central Africa, under a single-party regime from 1979 to 1992, before being defeated in the first multi-party elections by Pascal Lissouba.
He returned to power in 1997 during a civil war, was then elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2009. In 2015, he amended the Constitution to remove the two-term limit for the presidency and was re-elected in 2016.
In April 2023, three opposition groups, without parliamentary representation, launched an "Alliance for democratic change in 2026".
This platform includes, in particular, the Rally for Democracy and Development of former President Jacques Joachim Yhomby Opango, who died in 2020, as well as the Movement of Republicans and the People's Party.
