Côte d’Ivoire : Ouattara gracie Mahamadou Hawa Gassama, le député malien condamné à 3 ans de prison
In Mali, media outlets report that MP Mahamadou Hawa Gassama has been free to move about since Tuesday, February 10, 2026. The politician, convicted in Ivory Coast for insulting President Alassane Ouattara, is said to have received a presidential pardon.
According to Malian diplomatic sources, this strong gesture by the Ivorian statesman comes after intense mediation and constructive dialogue between Abidjan and Bamako.
It should be noted that the MP had been sentenced to three years in prison by the Abidjan-Plateau Court of First Instance for "insulting" and "making outrageous remarks online" against Alassane Ouattara. He was also ordered to pay a fine of 5 million CFA francs.
Mahamadou Gassama was arrested in July 2025 when he returned from a stay in Séguéla (a city in northwestern Ivory Coast).
He was accused of remarks made in September 2022 during an interview with a Malian media outlet. In this interview, Mahamadou Hawa Gassama called the Ivorian President "an enemy of Mali".
