Coup d’État en Guinée-Bissau : Le Portugal prend enfin position
A week ago, Guinea-Bissau fell under military rule following a coup. President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, arrested shortly afterward, was released a few days later. Portugal, the former colonial power, refrained from commenting on the coup until yesterday, Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
In a statement published on its official website, the government of Pedro Sanchez said it was taking up the cause of democratic values, calling for a "(rapid) return to constitutional normality" in the country.
"It is essential to return to constitutional normality."
He also calls on "all parties to refrain from any act of violence, whether institutional or civic in nature, stressing that political stability is essential to the security of the population and the democratic future of the country."
In another statement, the Portuguese Foreign Minister, Paulo Rangel, stressed the need to renounce violence and to quickly return to constitutional order. "It is fundamental to return to constitutional normality," the official emphasized.
