Deux fortes détonations entendues à la périphérie de Bamako
Two loud explosions were heard Monday evening near the airport area on the outskirts of Bamako, the capital of Mali, where jihadists allied with rebels carried out large-scale attacks on Saturday targeting strategic positions of the ruling junta.
The situation then returned to calm, an AFP correspondent observed.
It was not immediately possible to identify the origin of these detonations.
Shortly before the explosions, a convoy of pickup trucks and troop transport trucks sped towards the airport, AFP observed.
A military aircraft also briefly flew over the area.
This district of Senou was the scene of intense fighting on Saturday between the Malian army and jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, an Al-Qaeda ally) who are allied with the Tuareg independence rebellion of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). An army helicopter carried out airstrikes there.
Mali, a vast Sahelian country, has been plagued by conflicts and jihadist violence since 2012.
The Malian junta finds itself in a critical and unprecedented situation since the 2020 coup: Defense Minister Sadio Camara has been killed, and General Assimi Goïta, head of the junta, has not been seen and has not spoken since the start of hostilities on Saturday morning.
