It had been known since the end of January 2026. The special prosecutor tasked with investigating crimes committed under Jammeh is a British national. His identity was kept secret until Wednesday, April 8th. It was on that date that Attorney General Dawda A. Jallow revealed that Martin Hackett was in fact the prosecutor appointed by President Adama Barrow.
To direct investigations and coordinate prosecutions before the Special Criminal Court
The Gambian newspaper 'The Point' recently reported that the British justice official has already arrived in Banjul. He will hold his first meetings with representatives from the Ministry of Justice and the Special Prosecutor's Office.
Martin Hackett will have to rigorously direct the investigations and coordinate the prosecutions before the Special Criminal Court created to try the crimes against humanity that the Jammeh regime allegedly committed between July 1994 and January 2017, in accordance with the recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission.
