Événements de 1989 : La Mauritanie va verser 26 milliards d’anciens ouguiyas aux victimes (média)
The Mauritanian government is preparing to take a crucial step in managing its humanitarian liabilities, with the imminent payment of a first tranche of compensation intended for the victims of the tragic events of 1989.
According to information relayed by the Mauritanian media "Trust Magazine" taken up by Emedia, approximately 26 billion old ouguiyas will be released in this framework, marking a major turning point towards the official recognition of this tragedy long buried in the collective memory.
This compensation, the result of long consultations between the authorities and representatives of the victims, aims to repair a national wound that is still raw, informs the source, adding that an important meeting was held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, in El Mina, in the capital Nouakchott, bringing together the beneficiaries, the survivors and several political figures involved in the reconciliation process.
MP Khally Mamadou Diallo, who was present at the meeting, expressed his unreserved support. "As a representative of the people, I wanted to be there to listen, but also to express our solidarity and commitment to them," he said on his Facebook page, as reported by the source. He called for a "transparent" approach, in which "all victims will have their rights restored" and "those responsible will be held accountable for their actions before the courts."
The president of the victims' coordination, Ousmane Lo, for his part, presented a detailed report on the ongoing discussions with the government, confirming that the authorities have given their agreement in principle to begin payments.
It should be recalled that the events of 1989 erupted following a border dispute between Mauritanian herders and Senegalese farmers, which escalated into widespread ethnic violence. The conflict caused thousands of deaths, mass expulsions, and the forced exile of tens of thousands of people to Senegal, Mali, and other parts of Mauritania. Diplomatic relations between Nouakchott and Dakar were severed for several years.
Between 1989 and 1991, this crisis profoundly disrupted the Mauritanian social fabric, exacerbating intercommunal tensions along the Senegal River. More than three decades later, the government's compensation initiative appears to be an attempt to close an open wound, while laying the foundations for lasting national reconciliation.
