Ghana : un convoi militaire attaqué, trois civils tués
The convoy, carrying approximately 140 people travelling from Bawku to Bolgatanga, came under fire in the Binduri administrative area from unidentified men, according to a statement.
The army claimed to have repelled the attack and killed seven of the assailants.
"During the pursuit, the army discovered and recovered from a fugitive who had taken refuge in a mosque a G3 automatic rifle, two magazines filled with 20 cartridges each, as well as 176 additional cartridges," the statement reads.
Ten other suspects have been arrested, according to the same source.
The Ghanaian army warned the population against obstructing ongoing security operations and offered its condolences to the families of the victims.
This new outbreak of violence is part of a long-standing conflict in and around Bawku, where tensions, often linked to chieftaincy rivalries between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups, go back decades and periodically escalate into deadly clashes.
The region experiences cycles of reprisals, curfews and massive security deployments by the army and police, while attacks on civilians and security forces disrupt cross-border trade and daily life.
Despite mediation efforts by successive governments and traditional authorities, the dispute remains unresolved, making this area one of the most persistent hotspots of insecurity in Ghana.
