The National Transitional Council (CNT) reacted strongly yesterday to the broadcast by RTP África radio of information alleging an attempted bribery of a member of the ECOWAS military mission, currently in Bissau.

In an official statement, marked by several passages in bold and underlined text, the spokesperson for the National Transitional Council (CNT) described these revelations as "defamatory" and denounced journalist Paula Borges, responsible for their publication. The Council stated that it has already contacted the relevant authorities to initiate legal action against what it considers an attack on the image of the Guinean state.

RTP Africa maintains its sources

Faced with this challenge, RTP Africa reaffirmed the reliability of its information, asserting that its "credible" sources confirm the initial version. According to the radio station, a member of the mission discovered approximately 15 million CFA francs in his hotel room and immediately informed his mission leader. Surveillance camera footage reportedly shows the entry of an individual allegedly linked to the transitional government.

The Bissau Royal hotel denies

Although not mentioned in the initial article or on social media, the Bissau Royal Hotel, contacted on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, issued an official denial. Its management stated that it was unaware of any attempted bribery involving members of the ECOWAS mission during their stay. It also announced its intention to take legal action against the spread of these rumors.

A divisive case

The ECOWAS mission, composed of senior military officials from several countries in the sub-region, has thus found itself at the heart of a controversy pitting the Guinean transitional government against an international media outlet. While the National Transitional Council (CNT) denounces a smear campaign, RTP Africa insists on the strength of its evidence.

This affair, which mixes political, diplomatic and media issues, risks reviving tensions in a context already marked by institutional fragility in Guinea-Bissau.
