Guinée : La Cour suprême rejette le recours de l’UFDG sur l’annulation de son congrès
The legal dispute between the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG) and the Guinean government ended this Thursday, September 4, 2025. The Supreme Court dismissed the main opposition party, led by former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo, in its appeal against the decision of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization (MATD) canceling its congress scheduled for July 6, 2025. The UFDG contested a letter from Minister Ibrahima Kalil Condé prohibiting the holding of this congress.
However, the Supreme Court ruled the appeal inadmissible, finding that the UFDG had not complied with the conditions set out in Article 32 of the Charter of Political Parties, which governs the procedures for challenging administrative decisions. "The appeal is inadmissible due to lack of legal basis. The UFDG did not follow the procedures and deadlines prescribed by the Charter of Political Parties," said a magistrate close to the case.
A victory for the government
This decision reinforces the government's position, which had justified the ban on the congress by citing the risk of public disorder and internal irregularities within the party. The UFDG, for its part, denounced an attack on freedom of association and political expression, accusing the authorities of seeking to muzzle the opposition in the run-up to the constitutional referendum scheduled for September 21, 2025.
What future for the UFDG?
Faced with this legal setback, the UFDG finds itself at a strategic crossroads. Will the party consider political dialogue, a review of its internal procedures to comply with the Charter, or increased mobilization against what it calls an "authoritarian regime"? According to internal sources, a crisis meeting was held Friday evening to define the strategy to adopt, but no official statement has yet been issued.
This decision comes in a tense political climate, marked by the suspension of three opposition parties, including the UFDG, for 90 days, and the postponement of the campaign for the constitutional referendum to August 31, 2025. The opposition, which denounces an attempt to consolidate power by the junta led by General Mamadi Doumbouya, has called for demonstrations starting Friday to contest these measures.
