Guinée : l'investiture du président Doumbouya fixée au 17 janvier
The inauguration of Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya will take place on January 17, the presidency announced on Tuesday, following his uncontested victory in a presidential election intended to complete the return to constitutional order four years after a coup that brought him to power.
The ceremony will be held at the Lansana-Conté stadium, in the suburbs of Conakry, the Guinean presidency indicated in a post on its Facebook account.
General Doumbouya was elected for a seven-year term in the December 28th election, with a landslide victory of 86.72% of the vote, against opponents of little stature.
This coup leader, who has ruled Guinea with an iron fist since a coup in 2021, won an election tailor-made for him without campaigning.
His public appearances are very rare and the head of state has only spoken in pre-recorded videos in recent weeks.
The leading opposition figures in exile had been excluded from the election, in a context of shrinking freedoms in that country.
As the presidential election approached, Mamadi Doumbouya's usual camouflage fatigues and red beret had given way to civilian clothes during his very rare public appearances, always surrounded by his men from the Special Forces Group from which he came.
In September 2021, it was at the head of these forces that Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya stormed the presidential palace and overthrew the elected president Alpha Condé.
He then promised that neither he nor any member of the junta would stand in an election at the end of a transition period.
An independent presidential candidate, General Doumbouya was supported by a movement bearing his initials, GMD: Generation for Modernity and Development.
The United States, France, and China have congratulated Mr. Doumbouya on his victory.
Since the beginning of the junta's rule, a pall of repression has fallen over Guinea.
Several political parties have been suspended, demonstrations - banned since 2022 - are being repressed and many opposition and civil society leaders have been arrested, convicted or forced into exile.
