Guinée : Quand les jeunes artistes ressuscitent les classiques de la musique guinéenne
Are they truly aware of the value of Guinean musical works, those that have stood the test of time and remain timeless?
The question deserves to be asked, given the recent enthusiasm of many young artists who are now distinguishing themselves by reviving the great classics, following in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors.
More and more artists are revisiting the hits of our glorious musical heritage, adapting them to the times. These covers, often modernized, go viral on social media, propelling their creators into the spotlight while reconnecting young people with their roots.
A return to musical roots
Established artists are now drawing inspiration from traditional Guinean rhythms and sounds, once popularized by legendary orchestras. The expertly orchestrated albums from the golden age now serve as reference points and inspiration for this new generation.
But the question remains: what really motivates these young people to return to a career path they have long neglected?
Some claim that the old rhythms are "outdated." Yet, despite these prejudices, the compositions of the pioneers continue to resonate with the same intensity, proving that their artistic essence remains intact.
A dynamic to be encouraged
This wave of young artists determined to revisit and revitalize old tunes is an initiative to be applauded.
Guitarist El Hadj Mohamed Kova Bavogui welcomes this, while also calling for more in-depth work on the form:
“It’s a good idea to go back to basics, but we need to go further in choosing appropriate and original instruments. The lead vocal can work, but young people should collaborate with instrumentalists capable of delivering the performances. Drum machines often kill authenticity. Using traditional instruments—congas, balafon, castanets, tunnè, pastoral flute—would restore the soul of our music.”
Revaluing the classics: a major cultural challenge
This approach is just a beginning. It is time for managers, producers and cultural stakeholders to take a greater interest in it.
Promoting the revival of Guinean classics would allow young artists to absorb the authenticity and creative genius of their elders.
Dedicated festivals or national competitions rewarding the best reinterpretations of great works of the past would be a tremendous opportunity to revive Guinean cultural pride.
Key examples: from Baldé Sadio to Soul Bang’s
The song "Dyéré Lèrè" by the late Baldé Sadio perfectly illustrates this revival. Long before Soul Bang's audacious version, this piece had already been covered several times, notably by Rizo Bangoura and Gilmar Diallo of Kolima Jazz.
But it was Soul Bang's modern arrangement and refined staging that breathed new life into this timeless masterpiece.
Artistic collaboration was also evident: Manamba Kanté paved the way with his cover of the legendary "Bhouloun Dyouri" by Hadja Binta Laly Sow, our national Mama. Despite the controversies, the success was immediate, confirming that the public remains deeply attached to these sounds of yesteryear.
Preserving Guinean musical identity
Today, many are rejecting foreign influences and reconnecting with their musical identity.
Drawing inspiration from other cultures is not a fault, but preserving one's own remains a mark of honor and pride.
The singer Dyély Kaba Bintou, in collaboration with Habib Fatako, is a prime example. Their song "Ghuino Yangai" — a modern reinterpretation of the late Sékouba Fatako — is now playing in homes everywhere.
A vibrant tribute that proves the flame of Guinean music has never gone out.

L’état doit demander à Simon Preira, opposant et rebelle Bissau guinéen de quitter Ziguinchor. C’est une menace grave pour la sécurité publique. Diomaye doit être ferme comme Emballo est parti lui aussi
