Kaolack : Après la vidéo virale d'un chauffeur contre un policier, une enquête interne ouverte à la police
The circulation on social media of a video implicating a police officer assigned to traffic duty in Kaolack has sparked a strong reaction. After verifying the facts and interviewing both parties, an internal investigation was opened by the provost brigade on the instructions of its superiors.
On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the driver of an intercity minibus, commonly known as "Cheikhou Chérifou", posted a video online relating a dispute he had with a police officer in charge of traffic in Kaolack.
According to the version of the ticketing officer, the driver, arriving from the Tambacounda road, signaled his presence at the entrance to the city by an abusive use of his high beams, dangerously dazzling other road users.
When questioned by the police officer, he was notified of the offence of "using non-compliant lights" and a ticket was issued.
Obstruction, insults and provocation
Refusing to comply with the traffic violation procedure, the driver deliberately obstructed the officer's work by circling him while hurling insults and provocations at the police. The driver himself admitted to having previously served a two-year prison sentence following a prior altercation with a police officer.
Faced with this blatant obstruction and in order to clear the road, the police officer grabbed the offender by the collar to force him to comply. It is this action, filmed and taken out of context, that has fueled the controversy on social media.
Taken to the police station, the driver admitted his wrongdoing.
Emergency police units were dispatched to the scene following the report. The driver was taken to the police station and placed in the custody of the duty officer. He underwent a breathalyzer test, which came back negative, and was then questioned in a joint session with the police officer.
At the end of the hearing, the minibus driver admitted his wrongdoing, apologized, attributing his behavior to a moment of anger, before paying the fixed penalty and leaving the scene freely.
An internal investigation to get to the bottom of things
Despite this outcome, the police hierarchy decided not to let the matter rest. On the orders of the command, the provost brigade opened an internal investigation to examine all the circumstances of this incident.
